University of Pennsylvania
The University of Pennsylvania’s (Penn) Graduate School of Education (GSE) invites applications for a full-time open-rank tenure track faculty position at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level, focused on artificial intelligence (AI) in education
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have an earned doctorate and an outstanding record of research productivity and teaching expertise, commensurate with experience level, in one or more of the following areas:
- Investigating foundational principles of various learning and participation processes in relation to AI through empirical studies in K12 educational contexts.
- Developing, building, and evaluating AI-based applications that may include resources for classrooms and students, and instructional supports for both in-service and pre-service teachers.
- Researching the impact that AI applications have on practice, particularly in K12 classrooms with considerations for how knowledge and skills related to AI will prepare populations for future education and careers.
In addition to the above, strong candidates will have a deep awareness and interest in addressing ethical challenges related to AI in education such as sociocultural and economic impacts of AI, how algorithmic bias creates inequalities, and emergent privacy challenges. The successful candidate will have interest, experience, or expertise in areas that provide insight into societal ramifications of the rise of AI in education and goals for equity in addition to core expertise in AI development. Within GSE the successful candidate will provide leadership in the school’s overall efforts to build solid instructional expertise, curricular supports for graduate programs and centers, and mentoring of students in AI-related activities. Within Penn, the successful candidate will have opportunities to represent GSE’s perspectives in AI-related decision making.
We envision a new colleague who will contribute to research that aids K12 populations in addressing social inequality through resource allocation and promoting structures and programming to support learning and improved life-long outcomes that are fundamental to the public provision of education. The University of Pennsylvania is located in Philadelphia, a historically under-resourced district where the vast majority of students are minoritized. While experience in Philadelphia is not an expectation, we hope that our new colleague will join us in our dedication to supporting K12 education and AI applications across the globe and nation, as well as our local school district.
